Not much to say…

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Well, I haven’t posted in a while, but I really wanted to push my last political burp down off the top so I guess I’ll give you an update on what’s going on. I’ve applied for a handful of jobs lately, mostly looking for something 20-30 hours a week that isn’t web or photography related. Working from home has a tendency to make it seem like all you do is work when you’re at home so I need a change of pace. Also, it would be nice to get back into a bi-weekly payday setup; it’s been awhile. So far I’ve managed to score one interview with the new Smith’s that is going in about 2 miles from here. I applied for the Photo Center or to be a Cashier, we’ll see what happens. The interview is next week, the store opens on November 11. I know, I’m aiming high.

My main reason though is I’d like to spend more time focusing on me; focusing on my photography business and getting more customers so instead of spending many hours a day doing web work for other people and then being too burned out to do it for me, I’d rather do something totally different so come computer time I’m totally excited to work for me. I’m starting to learn a new style of post-processing (photoshopping) that I’d like to apply more in my photography; something I think will set me apart a little bit more and also allow me to raise my prices due to the increased time for editing. You can see where I’m going here and here. Now I just need to gather a large collection of textures to work with.

The election is over in less than 2 weeks; hallelujah! I’m so tired of hearing about it and getting frustrated over it and seeing this country divide more and more every day. I’m also tired of the media and their horrid spin on everything; having the country decide will at least put them in check one way or the other. Enough with the doom and gloom!

Anything else? I think that’s about it. Oh, I also applied to do Freelance for Heritage… I know I know, I was pretty happy to leave there but having some design work to do very part time sounds kind of nice to keep my skills honed up somewhat. We’ll see how that goes.

The Only Issue that Matters

Monday, October 13th, 2008

While the candidates for President bicker about the Economy, Iraq, National Security, Unemployment, Disaster Relief, friends and foes and more, let me spend a few minutes and talk about what I believe is one of the most important aspects of the Presidency: the appointment of Judges. While Congress and the President make the laws, the judges of the Supreme Court ultimately decide what is and what is not legal. However, unlike the President who is limited to 8 years, Supreme Court Justices are on the bench until they die, retire, resign or are impeached; currently the longest serving Justice is John Paul Stevens, who has been serving since 1975.

So how does this affect the Presidency? Take a look a the moral issues that face us today, and find out which side of the fence your candidate sits on. Do you sit on the same side? Rest assured, when the time comes for the President to choose a nominee to be a Judge, they will most likely lean towards candidates that echo their moral beliefs.

Same-Sex Marriage This issue is definitely in the hot seat right now as it’s on the ticket once again in California. In 2000 the will of the people strongly voted for maintaining that marriage was between and man and a woman, but earlier this year the high and mighty judges of the California Supreme Court overruled that decision and made it legal. On November 4 Proposition 8 is on the ballot, “Proposition 8 is an initiative measure on the 2008 California General Election ballot titled Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. If passed, the proposition would change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California. A new section would be added stating “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” Source.

This scares me to death! Two parents were NOT given the opportunity to opt-out their son on the teaching of same sex marriages in his school; the parents were not given the right and freedom to dictate what their children are taught! And to top it off, the father was arrested! Where do we live?

My defining point here is, where does Barrack Obama sit on this issue?

“Barack Obama might be the first major candidate for president to support same-sex marriage.”

“He won’t say as much. His definition of a “new politics” is capacious enough to allow for pose and slipperiness (as long as he’s the one engaged in them). But his stance on a California supreme-court decision that ripped away any middle ground on the issue makes him operationally pro-gay marriage.”

“In California, a domestic-partnership law gives gay couples, in the words of the decision, “virtually all of the legal rights and responsibilities accorded married couples under California law.” But that’s not enough. Marriage must be redefined to include same-sex relationships. Any arrangement short of this is comparable to segregation: famously progressive California as Bull Connor’s Alabama. ”

“In a carefully hedged statement, Obama said he “respects the decision of the California Supreme Court.” He respects a decision that disregarded the will of the people in California, as expressed by a 2000 referendum that defined marriage as between a man and a woman; he respects a decision that excoriated his own position of support for civil unions and (theoretical) opposition to same-sex marriage; he respects a decision that rejects the sort of political compromise he extols. It’s like a professed abolitionist in 1857 saying he “respects” the Dred Scott ruling.” Source

Did you pay attention to that? Without blatantly saying it (and thereby giving himself a HUGE blow to his campaign), Barrack Obama supports gay marriage. Do you? If you don’t and you’re considering a vote for Barrack Obama, maybe you need to take a step back and investigate the moral character of this man; I have and he falls very short of my standards.

Fall TV 2008

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Fall is here, football is being played, the leaves are changing colors, and the new seasons of TV shows are up and running. I’ve decided to fill everyone in on the shows I’m watching.

Chuck I like this show. I pretty much had to catch the whole first season online, and was apprehensive at first, but I’ve really grown to like it. It’s fun, has enjoyable characters (several babes!) and it’s just a good, light show to stay on top of.

The Office What more can I say? I love Michael and Jim and Pam and Creed and Ryan and Phyliss and Angela and Stanley and Dwight and and and…

Heroes So far, I’m a big fan of the first two seasons. The third was cut short by the stupid strike, and I don’t know how sold I am on Season 4 just yet; the opener was not enjoyed. It was good, but… I hope they get back to their roots on this one.

Fringe The jury is still in deliberation on this one, thus far it’s proved to be an interesting series, but I don’t know if JJ Abrams pulled it off again. Cloverfield was a pretty boring movie, so hopefully he’s not in the same funk that produced that. So far it’s been moderately addicting, but things need to change if they want me hooked.

Prison Break This show is a strong, constant performer. So far Season 4 has proved to be top notch, the opener was a very emotional high capacity episode. All the favorites are still involved, the story is too much for real life, but right on par with the shows’ version of reality. If you haven’t caught any Prison Break before, rent the first few seasons and give it a watch! A very good show!

I don’t know what I’d do without DVR technology. I have all of these scheduled to record every week so I don’t miss a beat. Ahhh, television addictions. At least Hollywood can still deliver sometimes.
