To the limits
My sister Calli is pretty impressive. Well, not to leave out my other siblings, they’re impressive too, but today Calli gets to be Queen. A few months ago Katie asked her if she wanted to do a Triathlon together, Calli agreed. Katie dropped out for some reason or another, but Calli was dedicated to the cause. She found a great road bike for cheap online, bought all the gear, started running and swimming and doing what you’re supposed to do to get ready for something like this. And today was the day.
Yesterday at 4:30 Mom, Dad, Calli and I high-tailed it down to St George so she could make registration, had a great dinner at the Pizza Factory and then went and settled down at the Best Western. For $9. Calli found an internet error in her favor and got a $90 room for $9. She called after she made the reservation to make sure, and it came out legit. The final receipt was $10.03 with tax. Nice.
This morning we work up bright at early at 5:30 so my dad could take her off to the course before coming back and picking up mom and me. We were all there by 6:45. By 7:30 Calli was going at the fist event – a 1 mile swim in Sand Hollow reservoir. The weather was perfect. Fifty-one minutes later Calli emerged ready to tackle the next event. She had a little panic struggle at the beginning of the swim and almost threw in the towel, but she persevered and and fought her way through the mile.
Part 2 was a 28 mile bike ride. Ugh, that’s a long distance! She totally rocked that part and caught up a lot of the time she lost in the swim, passing up bikers left and right. She was well trained on the bike. Sadly, we missed her coming back for the transition to the last stage – a 10K (6.2 mile) run. She completed that in about an hour and ended up with a finishing time of about 3:10 minutes. Really well done.
As a side note, they offered 2 versions of this Triathlon. A Sprinter course which was 1/2 mile swim, 14 mile bike and 5K, and the Olympic which she did. This being her first Triathlon ever she of course opted for the Olympic course – was probably 1 of 2 or 3 at most that was doing a triathlon for the first time.
Calli, you’re today’s winner of the day. It was pretty inspirational to see you do so well and such a terrific feat. Maybe I’ll join you next year.
That is pretty impressive Calli, I have to be one of the first on Joely’s website to congratulate you on a job well done. And good on your Joel for paying respect where respect is due. THE JENKINS CLAN RULES (except for maybe Kurt, the jury is still out on him, jk).
