Once

A week or two on American Idol, my favorite contestant Kris sung ‘Falling Slowly’ from the movie Once. I’d never heard the song, or heard of the movie. I loved his performance though, by far one of my favorite of the season. I’ve purchased two songs from Idol this season, and both belonged to Kris. Adam is a better performer and the most talented, but Kris has the ‘It’ factor for me. A nice 23 yr old newlywed with some awesome passion in his voice.

Anyways, I decided to Netflix Once and give it a viewing. I loved it. I’ll shoot the disclaimer out right now – It’s rated R for language. They use the F word like Mormons use their own non-vulgar vulgar words. Not in the songs though. It’s… nice. Made for less than $100K I think, nothing fancy at all. Anyways, here’s the summary.

Guy plays music on the streets, it’s his passion. For work he fixes vacuums with his father. One day on the street Girl approaches him and throws a dime in his guitar case. Their friendship goes from there and lasts just a week before they part ways. What happens in the middle is just fun to watch. That’s a simple summary but it’s a simple movie!! If you don’t mind ignoring a slue of vulgarity (the worst word, nonetheless), it’s worth seeing. I was totally into it.

I have hated every independent film I have ever seen except this one. Even independent films that got rave reviews (Saints and Soldiers, for example) have just turned my stomach, I can’t even finish them. But something about this one just impressed me. Maybe the music? We own the soundtrack, and as good a Kris was, Glen Hansard’s voice is just unbeatable.
