The Only Issue that Matters

While the candidates for President bicker about the Economy, Iraq, National Security, Unemployment, Disaster Relief, friends and foes and more, let me spend a few minutes and talk about what I believe is one of the most important aspects of the Presidency: the appointment of Judges. While Congress and the President make the laws, the judges of the Supreme Court ultimately decide what is and what is not legal. However, unlike the President who is limited to 8 years, Supreme Court Justices are on the bench until they die, retire, resign or are impeached; currently the longest serving Justice is John Paul Stevens, who has been serving since 1975.

So how does this affect the Presidency? Take a look a the moral issues that face us today, and find out which side of the fence your candidate sits on. Do you sit on the same side? Rest assured, when the time comes for the President to choose a nominee to be a Judge, they will most likely lean towards candidates that echo their moral beliefs.

Same-Sex Marriage This issue is definitely in the hot seat right now as it’s on the ticket once again in California. In 2000 the will of the people strongly voted for maintaining that marriage was between and man and a woman, but earlier this year the high and mighty judges of the California Supreme Court overruled that decision and made it legal. On November 4 Proposition 8 is on the ballot, “Proposition 8 is an initiative measure on the 2008 California General Election ballot titled Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. If passed, the proposition would change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California. A new section would be added stating “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” Source.

This scares me to death! Two parents were NOT given the opportunity to opt-out their son on the teaching of same sex marriages in his school; the parents were not given the right and freedom to dictate what their children are taught! And to top it off, the father was arrested! Where do we live?

My defining point here is, where does Barrack Obama sit on this issue?

“Barack Obama might be the first major candidate for president to support same-sex marriage.”

“He won’t say as much. His definition of a “new politics” is capacious enough to allow for pose and slipperiness (as long as he’s the one engaged in them). But his stance on a California supreme-court decision that ripped away any middle ground on the issue makes him operationally pro-gay marriage.”

“In California, a domestic-partnership law gives gay couples, in the words of the decision, “virtually all of the legal rights and responsibilities accorded married couples under California law.” But that’s not enough. Marriage must be redefined to include same-sex relationships. Any arrangement short of this is comparable to segregation: famously progressive California as Bull Connor’s Alabama. ”

“In a carefully hedged statement, Obama said he “respects the decision of the California Supreme Court.” He respects a decision that disregarded the will of the people in California, as expressed by a 2000 referendum that defined marriage as between a man and a woman; he respects a decision that excoriated his own position of support for civil unions and (theoretical) opposition to same-sex marriage; he respects a decision that rejects the sort of political compromise he extols. It’s like a professed abolitionist in 1857 saying he “respects” the Dred Scott ruling.” Source

Did you pay attention to that? Without blatantly saying it (and thereby giving himself a HUGE blow to his campaign), Barrack Obama supports gay marriage. Do you? If you don’t and you’re considering a vote for Barrack Obama, maybe you need to take a step back and investigate the moral character of this man; I have and he falls very short of my standards.
