Wages
“I got a raise at work today!”
“Awesome! How much?”
“One dollar more per hour.”
“Sweet! So what are you up to now?”
“Fourteen an hour. I’m pretty stoked.”
“Nice!”
Once upon a time, not too long ago, conversations about hourly wages followed along those lines. Even today, wages are still compensated at either an hourly rate ($14/hr) or a yearly salary ($60K/yr). Well, I propose today that those olden phrases be replaced with something new, something hip, something now.
I drive a 4-door sedan with a 3.0L V6 engine. On the freeway I get about 28mpg. Therefore, if I drive one hour at 65mph I will use 2.3 gallons of gas. At (lowballing) $4.00/gallon, that means it costs me $9.20/hour to drive my car. Thankfully, I earn more per hour working than I spend per hour driving. But what if you drive an SUV?
65 miles / 14mpg = 4.6 gallons per hour (gph), 4.6gph * $4 = $18.40/hr
Where do you fall? Do you make more per hour working? Or do you spend more per hour driving? When you go to buy that new car or SUV, maybe focus a little on how much per hour it will cost you to drive it and see if your wages match, maybe just looking at the sticker price and monthly payment isn’t enough anymore.
